Obsidian belongs to the quartz group, and it is also called volcanic glass. It is the result of volcanic lava coming in contact with water. Often the lava pours into a lake or ocean and is cooled rapidly. This process produces a glassy texture in the resulting rock. Iron and magnesium give the obsidian its typical black color.
There are several types of obsidian:
- black (apache tears)
- black – brown (mahogany)
- black with a snowflake pattern (snowflake obsidian)
- black with a rainbow sheen (rainbow obsidian)
- black with silver (silver)
- black with gold (gold)
Obsidian has been used by ancient peoples to make magical objects for ceremonial purposes, but also as a cutting tool and for weapons.
Much Mexican art objects are still made of obsidian. Please take into account that all these objects have a strong energy field.
The name ‘obsidian’ has been derived from the Latin name ‘obsio’, other sources say that the stone is named after its discoverer Obsius.
Obsidian helps against all eye ailments and sharpens the eyesight. A more spiritual quality of obsidian is that it reveals the true self.
We can learn a lot from obsidian, but it can only be used by people who are aware of the exceptional magical strength of this stone. Especially black obsidian is a powerful stone, aimed at revealing the true nature of the wearer, which can be confronting. Illusion disappears and only the truth remains. Obsidian works like a magnet which converts spiritual strength into decisiveness. It is always unsuitable for children!
Obsidian shows the true nature of the color black, a color that is seldom understood in our Western culture. Black is frequently considered as negative, distressing, dark, and is the color of mourning and black magic. But black has also a positive side. In the east it is the color of birth, the color of the highest degree of mastership, think for example at the black belt in martial arts.
Everyone must experience the process of truth. Light and shadow cannot exist without each other. Black obsidian carries both qualities, when looked at you can see the light within.
Obsidian is also a suitable stone to meditate with. Especially apache tears have been used for this purpose. Obsidians were also used for scrying, a form of divination with a black mirror. It is advisable to use a rock crystal after meditating with obsidian to restore the balance between dark and light.
